Modern combat is very different than 20th century though, which could turn you off. There is not fluid campaign like the previous titles (only a mission based campaign), but there are many mods, with many missions to do. Like Silent Hunter, the game shows it's age but is very playable right now.
If all of this blabbering about submarines got you interested, there is still Dangerous Waters, a modern submarine simulator. If the devs continue with it, it will probably will be a go to title for any time of seafaring simulation. Orders need to be physically carried out, sailors have morale and food to manage, officers have skills, but, the game is early access and it shows: lot's of bugs, lot's of performance problems, which are expected, of course, but be aware. You control a crew, that in turn controls a sub. Again, WWII submarine simulator, and honestly this one, for now is the closest to my dream game but with some caveats. More recent, and on sale right now, is UBOAT. Note: If you go with Silent Hunter IV get the DLC, most mods require it. I haven't played them in quite some time but I would recommend.
Nowadays, most of the community is kept afloat by it's mods, both Silent Hunter III, IV and V have fantastic mods available that will take them to whole other levels of simming. The simulation is good, but the games do show their age. The Silent Hunter series is about WWII submarines but you can get the feel of being a captain on patrol. For the latter, unfortunately, submarine warfare seems to be the only options. Many games focus more on naval tactics than actual ship management. Man, I am in the same boat, but unfortunately I still haven't found a perfect fit, only some alternatives that end up scratching one of the itches that a boat sim would do.įirstly, most of what there is about boating seems to be wargames.
